HUMAN-LEVEL DETERMINISM · VERY HIGH · FUNDAMENTAL DETERMINISM · OPEN · FULL-LIFE PREDICTABILITY · SPECULATIVE

I don’t think we choose independently of the conditions that produced us. Deliberation still happens, and what we decide still affects what follows.

WHAT I THINK

States arise from prior conditions. My decisions come from my biology, brain, memories, experiences, surroundings, available information, and current state. I did not independently author those conditions.

The brain really does compare options and decide. I reject a kind of free will where a person could choose independently of the complete conditions producing that choice.

I also currently believe that identical total prior conditions would produce the same decision. That is a stronger claim than causal dependence alone, and it is where my belief in determinism comes in.

DELIBERATION STILL MATTERS

Thinking, learning, deciding, and acting are events within the causal process, not things outside it. They change the conditions from which the next state develops.

Understanding behavior causally changes how I respond to people. I still use boundaries and accountability, but I look for what produced the behavior and what could change what happens next.

DETERMINISM AND PREDICTION

I lean very strongly toward determinism at the human level. I am less certain about whether reality is deterministic at its deepest level.

If genuinely random physical events exist, they would not give us independent self-authorship. But whether they could change a human decision is a separate question; I don’t treat it as settled.

I think a system with every relevant variable and enough computational power could theoretically predict a human life. I don’t know whether obtaining that information or performing the computation is physically possible. Determinism does not by itself establish practical predictability.

I came to these beliefs through my own experiences and thinking. I use AI to ask me questions, find contradictions, and organize my answers. It does not decide what I believe.
