Meaning
CURRENT POSITION · NO ASSIGNED PURPOSE
Life has no assigned purpose. Meaning comes from what genuinely matters to the person living it.
WHAT I THINK
I don’t think reality assigns one correct purpose to life.
Meaning comes from the goals, experiences, relationships, or activities that genuinely matter to the conscious person living that life.
One person can find meaning through family or physics while someone else finds it through games, art, relationships, competition, building, or ordinary pleasures.
Someone genuinely fulfilled by playing League is not living a less meaningful life than someone fulfilled by advancing physics.
For the kind of meaning I am talking about here, a being has to be aware enough to understand its life and what matters within it. I do not currently think animals create meaning in that reflective sense.
PERSONAL MEANING IS NOT SOCIAL VALUE
Something being deeply meaningful to one person does not mean it produces the same value for everyone else.
A life spent playing League and a life spent advancing physics could be equally meaningful to the people living them while having very different effects on society.
A purpose can also be genuinely meaningful to someone while still being morally unacceptable.
Someone could build their life around domination, power, or harming others and genuinely experience that as meaningful. Morality still determines what society should allow them to do to other people.
HOW I FIND WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS
A desire does not become fake just because society helped cause it. Everything I want has causes.
The harder question is whether I actually value the activity or life itself, or only the recognition attached to it.
If I would not want it without praise, status, approval, or the image it gives me, I may be pursuing the symbol rather than what I actually care about.
I don’t think there is one clean test.
I look at whether the desire persists over time, whether I would still want the activity without status or approval, whether I understand where the desire came from and still endorse it, and whether pursuing it gives me something deeper than recognition.
I think you learn more about what is actually yours when praise and criticism do not completely rewrite what you want.
Inherited religion, career prestige, money, romantic expectations, approval, and the appearance of having a meaningful life can all be confused with meaning itself.
Sometimes I need distance from daily noise and other people’s expectations to notice which desires remain when that pressure becomes quieter.
Too much isolation can distort things in the other direction and turn into rumination or self-sabotage. The useful point is usually somewhere between constant outside noise and complete withdrawal, although briefly experiencing an extreme can sometimes help me understand the middle better.
PAIN AND IMPERMANENCE
A goal or life can remain meaningful through frustration, sacrifice, grief, uncertainty, or years of difficulty.
Meaning is not the same thing as feeling good all the time. I don’t think constant pleasure would automatically create a meaningful life, and without contrast it might stop meaning much at all.
Impermanence is one of the things that makes existence valuable to me.
A relationship, project, identity, experience, or period of life does not need to last forever to matter.
Something ending does not erase what it was while it existed. Knowing that an experience is limited can give it more weight and make the time inside it more valuable.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR ME
For me, meaning currently comes mostly from truth, building, ambition, and trying to affect what happens after me.
Those are my reasons for continuing and pushing forward. I do not think everyone else needs to organize their life around the same things.
The specific goals I am pursuing are under Personal Direction.
